In many cases, older movies can only be found on used or even pirated DVDs from places like eBay. As such, I’ve updated my guide for 2022 on how I rip DVDs and Blu-Rays into my Mac, utilizing the power of HandBrake for transcoding into various formats. The Basic Process:

1. Use MakeMKV to rip the main title of the physical disc, typically the longest title, into an MKV file. MakeMKV offers both shareware and paid versions.
2. Transcode the resulting MKV file to an MP4 file using HandBrake’s 1080p or 4K presets.
3. Edit the file metadata with MetaZ.
4. Copy the final file to the Media directory on my NAS.

Once the file is copied over, Jellyfin automatically recognizes and scans the new movie, adding it to my library for easy access.

Handling TV Shows:

Ripping TV shows involves a slightly more complex process. Each episode needs to be ripped individually, transcoded in bulk, and have its metadata edited in batches. Organizing these episodes into season-specific folders ensures Jellyfin correctly categorizes them.
