How I Rip DVDs and Blu-Rays into my Mac (2022 Edition)

When it comes to digitizing physical media such as DVDs and Blu-Rays on a Mac, users often turn to reliable tools like MakeMKV and HandBrake. MakeMKV facilitates the conversion of video from physical discs into a set of files, while HandBrake is used to convert those files into a format suitable for different devices.

It's been more than a decade since I first outlined the process of ripping movies from various physical media. Back then, the digital media landscape was dominated by a few centralized services. Today, with the proliferation of countless streaming platforms, the necessity to rip and store your own media collection has only increased.

In many cases, older movies can only be found on used or even pirated DVDs from places like eBay. As such, I’ve updated my guide for 2022 on how I rip DVDs and Blu-Rays into my Mac, utilizing the power of HandBrake for transcoding into various formats. Some enthusiasts even maintain dedicated transcoding servers to create optimal archival copies, akin to professional setups by platforms like YouTube.

The Basic Process:

  1. Use MakeMKV to rip the main title of the physical disc, typically the longest title, into an MKV file. MakeMKV offers both shareware and paid versions.
  2. Transcode the resulting MKV file to an MP4 file using HandBrake’s 1080p or 4K presets.
  3. Edit the file metadata with MetaZ.
  4. Copy the final file to the Media directory on my NAS.

Once the file is copied over, Jellyfin automatically recognizes and scans the new movie, adding it to my library for easy access.

Handling TV Shows:

Ripping TV shows involves a slightly more complex process. Each episode needs to be ripped individually, transcoded in bulk, and have its metadata edited in batches. Organizing these episodes into season-specific folders ensures Jellyfin correctly categorizes them.

The Challenge of Older Movies:

It’s perplexing that purchasing older movies for networked devices remains a challenge today. One would hope the film industry would adopt a model similar to that of the music industry, wherein non-DRM media is easily and legally accessible.

Until then, I’ll continue ripping DVDs and Blu-Rays, preserving my media library one disc at a time.

Note: If you want to rip DVD content directly using HandBrake, you can install libdvdcss manually or with Homebrew:

brew install libdvdcss

Then run the following command to copy the libdvdcss libraries into the path Homebrew expects:

sudo cp /opt/homebrew/lib/libdvdcss.* /usr/local/lib/
