How Does TIG Welding Aluminum Without Gas Work?
TIG welding, also known as tungsten inert gas welding or gas tungsten arc welding, is a type of welding that uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld. Generally, TIG welding requires the use of a shielding gas to protect the weld from contamination, but it is possible to weld aluminum without gas using the TIG process. This kind of welding is known as DCEN TIG welding or “scratch start” TIG welding.
Here are the steps for TIG welding aluminum without gas:
Step 1: Clean the aluminum.
Before welding, it is important to clean the aluminum surface thoroughly to remove any contaminants. Use a wire brush or grinder to remove any oxide or corrosion on the surface.
Step 2: Choose the right tungsten electrode.
Select a tungsten electrode with a diameter appropriate for the thickness of the aluminum being welded. A 2% thoriated tungsten electrode is a good choice for this type of welding.
Step 3: Set up the TIG welder.
Set up the TIG welder to the DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative) setting. This will ensure that the aluminum is heated properly. Adjust the current and amperage settings based on the thickness of the aluminum.
Step 4: Set the tungsten electrode to touch the aluminum.
Hold the tungsten electrode against the aluminum surface and move it slowly to create a small arc. This will cause the aluminum to melt and create a pool of molten metal.
Step 5: Add filler metal.
Once the molten pool is formed, add filler metal to the puddle using a welding rod. As you add filler metal, continue to move the tungsten electrode along the seam.
Step 6: Continue welding.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the desired weld length is achieved. Remember to keep the tungsten electrode close to the aluminum surface but not touching it to maintain the arc.
Step 7: Allow the aluminum to cool.
Once the weld is complete, allow the aluminum to cool naturally. Do not use water or forced air to cool the aluminum, as this can cause it to warp.
In conclusion, TIG welding aluminum without gas requires some extra preparation and a steady hand, but it can be done successfully with the right technique. By following these steps, you can create strong and durable aluminum welds without the use of gas.
