I live next to a railroad track, which is much traveled especially at night. In the summer I would like to leave the windows open overnight, without having to use earplugs.

I was wondering whether it would be possible to install some kind of sound-absorbing device infront of the window. Since the railway line runs five floors below, I think it should be possible to prevent the sound waves from penetrating into the window opening. My first thought is to attach egg cartons outside the window, so that they block the 'line of sight' to the railroad track and thereby the direct sound popagation (sketch). Since there are trees on the other side of the track they should not reflect much noise.
Could such a measure have any effect, or am I missing some fundamental aspect of sound propagation?
