Electrical Equipment
While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the material, this is old information and no one is responible for any inadvertent errors.
You can find more information on our web, so please take a look.
Introduction
Only cables which are of current interest have been included, so the list of entries is not exhaustive. The contents have been sourced from previous guides, from technical publications, and, from in-house investigation. Where cable data is not easily resourced, the technical data is incomplete, but hopefully still of value.
Please note that this publication is for guidance only and does not include full engineering specifications.
Cables Reference Guide - Contents by Alpha-numeric Order (* indicates addition since last guide)
This table is provided for easy reference of cable by usage group, please note that it does not include all cables from the Cables Reference Guide.

General Notes
Cable option numbers tend to be of the format:
BCxxx-yy or BNxxx-zz
where the "C" indicates that the suffix "yy" describes the length of the cable in feet, for example
BC21M-09...is a BC21M cable 9 feet long, and the "N" means the length "zz" is described in meters.
BN25B-30 is a BN25B cable 30 metres long.
Some cable options are prefixed with an "E0" identifier, this simply indicates the European origin of the cable, for example E0-BCC05-50 is a 50 feet long BCC05 sourced in Europe.
Other Cable Lengths
Letters may be used for cable lengths, eg,
A = 100, B = 200, C = 300, D = 400, E = 500, H = 700, L = , for example -A5 = 150, -B5 = 250, -C0 = 300, -H5 = 750, -L0 = , so.......BN25B-H5 is a 750m BN25B cable, and BC22D-B5 is 250 feet long BC22D.
These letters may also be used to indicate decimals or feet and inches, thus BN19A-2E is a 2.5m BN19A, and BC26V-6D is a 6 feet 4 inches long BC26V.

Appendix A EIA Standards, Speed and Distance
Since , the Electrical Industries Association (EIA), decided to replace the 'RS-' identifier with EIA', therefore RS-232-C has been replaced by EIA-232-D. These two standards are compatible with each other. The EIA-232-D/CCITT V.24/V.28 standard was originally designed to specify the connection between a local interface and a modem. It was not intended to be used for connecting to terminals over long distances. The maximum specified length is 50 feet (15m), and shielded cable must be used in order to meet the requirements of FCC and VDE Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) regulations.
Although cable lengths of greater than 50 feet can be used with reasonable success, cable capacitance, noise, and ground potential difference restrict the line speed as the distances increase.
As a consequence of this, the performance of long distance communications to a terminal using EIA-232 does not meet today's requirements for terminal wiring. DEC423 is a superset of the RS-423-A/CCITT V.10 standard. RS-423-A has a different grounding and signal return path arrangement from EIA-232-D, as well as using different line driver and receiver chips. DEC423 uses line driver and receiver chips which have better filtering and tighter level tolerances than those specified by RS-232-A. In addition, DEC423 devices include transient suppressors for electrical overstress (EOS) and electro-static discharge (ESD) protection. DEC423 devices may also be connected with unshielded cable. The features provided by DEC423 devices provide reliable data communication over increased distances, typically feet (300m).
Table of Distances Between Devices
Device Type Speed: 4.8 Kbaud 9.6 Kbaud 19.2 Kbaud 38.4 Kbaud< DEC423 device to: DEC423 device ft ft ft 280ft DEC423 to EIA-232-D 200 ft 200 ft 50 ft 50 ft DEC422 to DEC422 ft ft ft ft
DEC423 uses the RJ45 Modular Jack, or the Modified Modular Jack (MMJ) connector instead of the much larger D-type connector defined in RS-449. DEC423 is signal compatible with the EIA-232-D standard when used for data-leads-only interconnection, ie, interconnection between devices using the different standards is possible but the speed and distance restrictions of EIA-232-D will still apply. DEC423 should always be used be used in preference to EIA-232-D for direct terminal connection over extended distances.
EIA-232-D terminals can be connected to DEC423 devices using either an H-x passive adapter, or a H-B active adapter. The H-B active terminal adapter is necessary when using an EIA-232-D terminal with a DEC423 interface if the longer cable lengths obtainable with DEC423 are required.
There are two types of DEC423 cable available: the H/6 "Building" cable which is of twisted pair construction, and the H "Office" or flat 6-core ribbon cable. BC16E cables are pre-terminated lengths of H cable. The maximum length for DEC423 cabling has been given, for example, feet at 19,200 Baud, and within this, 50 feet is the usually recommended maximum length of "office" cabling, however 100 feet would probably give satisfactory results.
DEC422 also incorporates EOS/ESD protection and RS-422 compatible drivers and receivers, thus DEC422 is ideal for use in high noise environments. DEC422, which uses differential line drivers supports cable lengths of up to feet (m) at all supported speeds.

Signal Levels used with EIA-232.
(EIA-232 is an unbalanced system with a common return).
For Data :
An EIA-232 transmitter generates a voltage of between -5 and -25 volts for a MARK (logic 1), and between +5 and +25 volts for a SPACE (logic 0).
An EIA-232 receiver recognizes voltages of above +3 volts as spaces, and voltages more negative than -3 volts as marks.
For Control :
Between -3 and -25 volts for a NEGATION, and between +3 and +25 volts for an ASSERTION.
EIA-423 :
EIA-423 is also an unbalanced system, but unlike EIA-232, separate return wires are used for both transmit and receive data. With a EIA-423 transmitter the voltage must be at least +4 volts for a space, and -4 volts for a mark.
EIA-422 :
EIA-422 uses two separate wires for each signal, and is a balanced system.
A mark is differentiated from a space by the polarity of one wire with respect to the other rather than with respect to ground.

Appendix G - "Confusable" Cable Summary Summary Part 1 Summary Part 2
Appendix H - Fibre Optics Notes
The fibre optic cables supplied by Digital such as the BN24B, BN24D, or BN24E are for internal use ONLY because they do not have a weather proofed or amoured jacket. 90% of fibre cable applications require that the cable be run externally either in a duct or even directly buried in the ground. It is a specialist job to define the cable required, the possible maximum lengths and the termination for a particular site and a particular application, so an in depth site survey will be required. Customers who do not have access to the necessary skills should be directed to their local Digital office or their account manager to IBS (Intelligent Building Services) who can provide a total installed and tested solution.
In general, the Digital recommendation for a new fibre optic installation is for 62.5/125 micron, dual window, graded-index profile, multimode glass-on-glass construction (EIA Class 1A). Digital is optimising its multimode fibre products for 62.5/125 fibre.
Connectors
Types of fibre-optic connectors in current use:-
ST - Bayonet
This type of connector has a "push-twist" fastening action. It virtually replaced the older SMA-type which has a screw-on fastening. The ST provides a higher reliability and a better connection than the SMA.
ST - Push-pull
The push-pull construction provides easy insertion and high repeatability.
SC
This connector is physically smaller than the ST-type, has rectangular cross-section, and has a push-pull fixing action. There is both a simplex and a duplex version.
Digital is using SC connectors in certain products because of the smaller physical size and also industry demand. The SC connector is specified in TIA/EIA 568-A. The duplex SC socket is considerably smaller than the widely used MIC socket.
MIC
The FDDI MIC (Media Interface Connector) is a duplex connector. The MIC is keyed, and is field programmable for the appropriate type of FDDI connection.
FC/PC
Digital chose the FC/PC connector for SM (Single Mode) fibre applications. One of the key selection factors was that FC-PC is physically different to the ST and thus customers could not inadvertently plug SM into MM (Multi Mode) sockets. However the newest physical media dependant options (PMDs), for example the DEFXS-BA, use ST connectors for SMF.
Additional Note For FDDI
FDDI modules which utilise Multimode Fibre (MMF) use both pairs of ST or SC connectors and also Media Interface Connectors (MIC). Modules utilizing Single Mode Fibre (SMF) use FC-PC connectors.
Conductors
MMF modules use 62.5/125 micron fibre. SMF modules use 8-10/125 micron fibre.
The maximum possible cable length between nodes for MMF is 2 km. The maximum possible cable length between nodes for SMF is 40 km.

In general, all SCSI cables with a "BC" designation are not wired to Fast SCSI specifications, whereas virtually all cables made with a "BN" designation are wired to Fast SCSI specifications, i.e.they have the correct impedance and internal wiring which is suitable for use with the demanding Fast SCSI.
Appendix L SCSI and DSSI Terminators and Tri-Link Adaptors - Summary
SCSI Terminators
H-A Single-ended, 8-bit SCSI bus Terminator with 50-pin, male, low-density connector.
Example usage: attached to a BN21V-02 adapter cable to terminate a single-ended SCSI bus at an end position controller, this would facilitate the removal of that controller without interrupting the bus.
12--01 Single-ended, 8-bit SCSI bus Terminator with 68-pin, female, high-density connector.
Example usage: supplied with early workstations and InfoServer 150 for bus termination.
H879 -AA FWD (Fast Wide Differential) SCSI bus Terminator with 68-pin, high-density, male connector.
Example usage: attached to an H885 -AA Tri-link Connector Block to terminate a FWD SCSI at an end position controller, this would facilitate removal of that controller without interrupting the bus.
12--04
50-pin, active single-ended terminator.
SCSI Connector Block
H885 -AA FWD SCSI Tri-link Connector Block with three 68-pin, high-density connectors, one one side one male, on the other side two female. A typical configuration would be:
Male To a Controller Female 1 To an H879-AA Terminator Female 2 To a BN21K cable
DSSI Terminator
12--01 DSSI bus Terminator with 50-pin, female MR type connector. Typical usage: with a 12--02 DSSI Tri-link Adapter attached to a DSSI controller/adapter to facilitate the removal of that adapter without interrupting the DSSI bus.
DSSI Connector Block
12--02 DSSI Tri-link Connector Block which is supplied attached to the DSSI port of DSSI controllers/adapters such as the HSD05, HSD10, HSD30, HS1CP. The adapter presents two 50-pin, male, MR connectors, to which would be attached a DSSI cable and a 12--01 DSSI terminator, or two DSSI cables.
