# Understanding a Telephony Modem.
## What is a telephony modem?
A telephony modem, also known as a voice modem, is a device that combines the functionality of a modem and a telephone. It allows users to connect to the internet through their existing landline telephone service.
### Step 1: Connection.
The first step in using a telephony modem is to connect it to your phone line. This is typically done by plugging one end of a telephone cable into the telephony modem and the other end into a phone jack in your home.
### Step 2: Setup.
Once the telephony modem is connected, you will need to set it up with your internet service provider. This usually involves entering your account information and configuring the modem with the appropriate settings.
### Step 3: Dialing.
With the telephony modem properly set up, you can now use it to connect to the internet. When you want to go online, simply dial the internet service provider's phone number using a phone that is connected to the modem.
### Step 4: Data transfer.
Once the modem has established a connection with the internet service provider, data can be transferred between your computer and the internet. This allows you to browse websites, send emails, and download files just like you would with a traditional modem.
### Step 5: Voice communication.
In addition to providing internet access, a telephony modem also allows for voice communication over the same phone line. This means you can make and receive phone calls while still being connected to the internet.
By following these steps, you can successfully use a telephony modem to access the internet and make phone calls using your existing landline service.
