However, investing in a solar storage system will cost money upfront. Before you make the decision to install solar batteries, you should first understand how long theyll last, and how frequently youll need to replace them.

How Long Will Solar Batteries Last?
Most solar batteries on the market today will last somewhere between five to 15 years. While that is a significant amount of time, youll likely need to replace them within your solar system's 25 to 30+ year lifespan.
Factors That Determine the Lifespan of Your Battery
You may be asking why this is such a varied range. There are a couple of factors, including the type of battery you install, how often you use the battery, and where the battery is stored, which significantly impacts how long the battery lasts.
Youve probably noticed that your laptop or smartphone battery wont last as long between charges after a couple of years. A fully charged battery may have lasted 12 hours when it was new. Now, it lasts three.
This is frustrating, but its inevitable when it comes to batteries. The more often you charge and discharge your battery, the less time the charge will last. After a certain amount of cycles, your batteries will no longer be able to store and discharge enough energy to make their use worthwhile.
Thats why the number of years batteries will last vary so greatly. Its not based on how many years theyve been installed but instead on how often each solar owner uses them. If you have an off-grid system that uses battery power each night, your batteries wont last as long as if you had a grid-tied system that only uses your batteries when the power goes out.
One way to help encourage your batteries to last longer is to pay attention to the manufacturers recommended depth of discharge, or DoD. DoD is the percentage of the batterys stored energy you use. For example, your batterys capacity is 13.5 kWh, and you use 10 kWh of its charge. The depth of discharge would be 74%.
DoD is important because pushing your battery beyond its recommended DoD can significantly shorten your batterys lifespan. Manufacturers will assign each battery type a recommended maximum DoD.
Three types of batteries are commonly used in solar storage: lead-acid, lithium-ion, and saltwater. Of these three options, lithium-ion batteries will last the longest. They also tend to offer the best storage capacity but likely wont be the least expensive option.
However, with the anticipated cycle length several times that of other options, the extra money could certainly be a worthwhile investment, saving you money in replacement costs down the road. Lithium-ion batteries also have a high DoD rate, often up to 80%, meaning youll be able to use more of your stored energy without harming the battery.
The other popular option today is lead-acid batteries. For years, their relatively low price and high watt-hour capacity have made them a mainstay in off-grid solar systems. Compared to other options, however, they last for far fewer cycles, meaning their lifespan will be the shortest.
Lead-acid batteries also have a lower DoD rate - sometimes between 30% and 50%, meaning you can only use a portion of the energy thats stored in the battery. While they may be less expensive upfront, youll likely have to replace them more frequently which could cost more in the long run.
Saltwater batteries, the third option, are a newcomer on the market. Instead of using corrosive materials, they use salt to store and discharge energy, making them extremely safe and easy to recycle. Saltwater batteries will likely last longer than lead-acid batteries, but likely wont last as long as lithium-ion batteries. They also have relatively high DoD rates, similar to lithium-ion batteries.
Another thing to take notice of when choosing a solar battery is the warranty offered by the manufacturer. Many manufacturers will guarantee their batteries for a specified number of cycles, or a specific time period, meaning you wont be on the hook if you end up with a product that isnt up-to-par.
Neither a hot nor extremely cold environment is ideal for batteries. If youre able to store the batteries in a garage or basement, or a part of the building thats out-of-the-way and somewhat temperature-controlled, your storage system can last longer than if you had the batteries exposed to the harsh elements.
In warmer temperatures, the chemical reaction in the batteries will happen more quickly, which decreases the batterys lifespan by increasing the wear and tear on the battery. In extreme cold, the electrons slow down, and the chemicals wont last as long as they typically would, meaning the battery will drain much more quickly.
In general, lead-acid batteries are more sensitive to temperatures than lithium-ion. Many manufacturers recommend keeping lead-acid batteries around 40°F to 80°F. Lithium-ion batteries can handle temperatures slightly below 0°F and are often okay if temperatures are high as 140°F. However, storing them in a more temperate environment is still advisable.
Saltwater batteries will perform best at temperatures above roughly 23°F and below 104°F, giving them a slight edge over lead-acid batteries. However, they are not quite as hearty as lithium-ion batteries.
Battery Lifespan Summed Up
With a five to 15-year expected life, solar batteries will likely have to be replaced at least once over the 25- or 30-or-more lifespan of your solar system. But by taking the proper care when using your battery, opting for quality products with good manufacturer guarantees, and installing the battery in a climate-controlled location, you can rest assured your battery will last a long time.

Solar battery type

Lead-acid
Lead-acid batteries are the oldest solar battery and have one of the lowest lifespans in the market. Lead-acid batteries have a cycle life of between - cycles, equating to around three to five years.
Lithium-ion
Lithium-ion batteries have come to dominate the market. Cycle lives vary, but quality solar lithium-ion batteries far exceed the lifespan of lead-acid batteries. Flow
Flow batteries are a relative newcomer in the solar battery market. They pump liquid electrolytes through electrochemical cells to store and discharge energy. They have a 100% depth of discharge, which exceeds that of lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries. This means they can export their entire capacity without degrading the batterys health. This translates to a lifespan on the upper end of the range, somewhere between 15 25 years.
Despite these positives, flow batteries arent taking over the market. Theyre still dwarfed compared to lithium-ion battery installations; why? Flow batteries are expensive. They require vanadium, which is costly to source, as well as toxic fluids to run. Currently, the majority of flow battery use is in large-scale industrial operations. This is because theres more upfront capital to afford a fleet of flow batteries, which can be housed in a safe, contained environment.
Environment
Where you choose to install your battery impacts its lifespan. A solar battery stored outside and in the brunt of the elements will deteriorate quicker than a battery in a controlled environment. That doesnt mean that your battery necessarily has to be stored indoors although garages are a typical storage area a sheltered outside area could be fine as well. The working temperature for solar batteries tends to be quite broad.
For example, Pylontechs US has a working temperature of 0°c - 50°c. This means that it will perform in most weather conditions in the Australian environment. However, when the environmental temperature is outside your solar batterys working range, its performance will decline and, in severe cases, malfunction or stop working. If this happens regularly, it has the potential to put undue strain on the battery and negatively impact its longevity.

Depth of discharge
Each solar battery has a depth of discharge (DoD) the percentage of the batterys capacity that can be discharged without damaging the batterys health. Well use the most common home battery type, lithium-ion, as an example.
Lithium-ion batteries have a depth of discharge of between 80% - 95%. The standard DoD of a lithium-ion battery is 90%, meaning that if your batterys capacity is 13 kWh, you can use 11.3 kWh without degrading the battery. Modern batteries have inbuilt protective systems that will prevent you from being able to use 100% of your batterys capacity.
Cycle life
Solar batteries come with a variety of cycle lives. A batterys cycle life is how many times it can perform a full charge and discharge cycle. The cycle life is one of the main determining factors of a solar batterys lifespan.
Maintenance
Solar batteries arent a particularly labour-intensive piece of equipment. Modern technology is advanced and reliable, but it still pays to monitor your batterys performance to mitigate any issues preemptively. What sort of warranty should I get with my solar battery?
Lithium-ion solar batteries usually have a 10+ year warranty. Shorter lifespan solar batteries, such as lead-acid, have shorter warranty periods. Chances are that youre looking for a lithium-ion battery, so what should you look for in a warranty?
Check to see what number of cycles is included in the warranty (the higher, the better) and how it works in relation to time (e.g. it is usually pro-rated in terms of years used. If your battery fails after five years and you want a refund, the refund will be calculated as 50% of the capital cost of the battery).
If you choose a quality battery, you shouldnt have any major issues, but its always good to know what youre looking for in a warranty before making your purchase.

What are deep cycle batteries?
Deep cycle batteries are batteries that have a depth of discharge of 80% or higher. As explained above, a DoD of 80% means that 80% of the batterys capacity can be discharged and charged without deteriorating the battery.
The term deep cycle battery was originally popularised to differentiate between lead-acid batteries back when they dominated the market, but as technology has advanced and improved, the most prevalent batteries are deep cycle.
So in many ways, the term deep cycle battery has become redundant in the solar industry. Nearly all quality solar batteries on the market will have a DoD of 80% or higher. Lithium-ion batteries usually have a DoD of 90%.
How long do solar batteries last in comparison to solar panels?
Solar panels have a longer lifespan than solar batteries. Solar panels will last between 20 - 30 years, whereas a lithium-ion solar battery will last up to 15 years.
There are two key takeaways from this: firstly, it emphasises the importance of choosing a durable, high-quality battery with a high cycle life and a history of reliability; secondly, the installation process matters. Who installs your battery, how its installed, and where its installed are all critical components in your batterys longevity.
