What is Thread Turning?

Thread turning is a method used to create screw-like grooves, known as threads, on a cylindrical object or inside a hole. This process is usually done on a machine called a lathe.

During thread turning, the workpiece (the rod or tube) spins, while a special cutting tool moves along it. This tool cuts the threads into the surface of the workpiece, similar to the threads you see on a bolt or the inside of a nut.

The workpiece is usually a cylindrical rod mounted in a rotating chuck, the cutting tool is then moved axially along its surface to create the thread pattern. For deeper threads or difficult material the process is repeated several times before the thread is in its final shape.

Both internal and external threads can be created in this way if the tool can access the area to be threaded.
